1, THE STYLE
Decide what type of photography style you’d like to have. Documentary, traditional, fine art or something more edgy.
Many photographers have a blend of characteristics, so I recommend finding somebody who specializes more in the style and feel you love. It’s very important, because this is how you will remember and see your wedding day. Checking out their website and Instagram feed is a good way to find out what their priorities are when shooting your big day.
2, THE PRODUCT
Make sure to choose a photographer who offers products you want to have from your wedding day.
Is having a good quality album as your first family heirloom important to you, or are you just looking to have some digital files on a disk? Are you planning on hanging some prints on the wall? Sharing images on social media? Some photographers will have more trendy products using different materials, (metallic, wood or acrylic wall art and albums) others specialize in traditional, timeless style like leather covered albums and canvases. Check out what type of package options do they have and what is included.
3, THE PERSONALITY
It’s important that you not only like your photographer, but bond with them too.
They will follow you around all day, witness and document everything. So the more comfortable you feel, the more fun you’ll have. And that will reflect on your pictures too. Is there something meaningful or important they should know about your family dynamic? It’s always helpful to talk about your relationships, so the photographer can capture those essential moments.
It’s important to have somebody on your day who is easy to be around, and thoughtful of you and your guests. In my opinion a professional photographer will be calm and polite in any situation, but bold enough to capture those important moments. Do you need somebody who is in control the whole time, telling people what to do? Or somebody who stays back and captures only the candid moments? Are they confident enough to pose large groups, but respectful enough to treat everyone with kindness, and doesn’t interrupt the moment no matter what.
Most couples forget to ask for a written contract, but it is very important to have. You’ll want guarantees on the quality of the images, the professionalism and courtesy of their service, the speed of delivery. Do they have pro-quality equipment? Do they back-up their images? What happens if something goes wrong or if the photographer gets sick on your wedding day? You have to prepare for everything.
At the end the photos and final products are how you will remember your wedding day, and how your big day will be preserved for your children and grandchildren. Make sure you choose somebody you trust so you can relax and have fun all day.
